Considerations for Purchasing Energy

Purchasing energy involves several important factors and considerations. To get started, you’ll need:

Latest copy of natural gas and
electric power bill

Letter of Authorization provided by an energy consultant or supplier

Tax exempt status, if applicable
(public sectors, manufacturing, or restaurants)

An understanding of your energy usage – is it for the comfort of you and your employees? Or business purposes (processing and manufacturing)?

Types of Rates

There are two types of energy rates: fixed and variable. A fixed rate plan is an all-inclusive price that provides budget certainty by ensuring the price will not change* for the duration of the contract term. A variable rate plan price will change monthly based on the energy market.

Apples-to-Apples comparisons evaluates two or more energy price offers from suppliers.

It is recommended for users to
review a minimum of three
suppliers before purchasing.

Contract Terms
and Conditions

The most important part of purchasing energy is fully understanding the terms and conditions of the supplier’s contract.

• Ensure all pricing components are
included in a fixed price contract.

• Understand “change in law” and
other components are subject
to change in a fixed price.

• Ensure the delivery point being used is
the all-inclusive supply price point.
