Nationally Recognized Minority-Focused Startup Accelerator Coming to Akron

Greater Akron—Bounce Innovation Hub, GAR Foundation, Burton D. Morgan Foundation, the City of Akron and the Greater Akron Chamber announced today their partnership with MORTAR, an accelerator and business development service for historically marginalized entrepreneurs.  MORTAR was founded in 2014 in Cincinnati and is a 15-week program that helps both existing and aspiring entrepreneurs learn the fundamental elements of business ownership and build a comprehensive business canvas. A primary goal of the program is to launch businesses that contribute to local economic development and establish a path to generational sustainability and wealth. It has been credited by Essence Magazine with helping Cincinnati become the fastest-growing economic power in the Midwest for minority small business owners.

AAF-Akron Presents the 75th Annual American Advertising Awards on Feb. 21

The 75th Annual AAF-Akron American Advertising Awards celebrates the creative spirit of excellence in advertising. It honors the best creative work produced by area advertising professionals and students. Brace yourself for oddities, mysteries and astounding acts of advertising illusion! AAF-Akron holds its annual American Advertising Awards (locally known as the Akron-Canton ADDYs) at The Akron Civic Theatre on Friday, February 22, 2019. The prestigious American Advertising Awards event is a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by AAF. It honors creative excellence and cultivates the highest standards in the industry. With entries from Akron, Canton and surrounding areas, it is the largest advertising and marketing event in the area.

This year’s theme is ADDY Cadabra and is hosted by Eric Mansfield. The reception, beginning at 5:00 pm, includes restaurant tasting stations, a gallery of creative and cash bar. The award ceremony begins at 7:30 pm. Immediately following the awards, the official ADDYs After Party will kick off right on stage. This intensive, six-month program is a proven classroom and peer-to-peer learning experience that has helped over 200 companies in the United States and around the world achieve significant, top-line growth including 40 in Northeast Ohio. Pyramid Consulting International has been recognized as one of the 2019 “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch,” an awards program presented by Michigan Celebrates Small Business.  The program received nearly 600 award nominations in 2019, which surpassed the last year’s record of 425 nominations. Winners were selected by Michigan-based judges from the banking, economic development, entrepreneurship development, and venture capital communities. The selected companies also go through a rigorous due diligence process.   Pyramid Consulting International will be honored at an awards ceremony during the fifteenth annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business gala event, May 8, 2019 in Lansing, Mich.

Hale Farm & Village Presents Music in the Valley Folk & Wine Festival on Jul. 13 & 14

Hale Farm & Village Presents Sow & Grow Farm Festival and Plant Sale on Jun. 8 & 9

Experience the past and present farming lifestyle of draft horse demonstrations, oxen talks, wheel plowing gardens, beekeeping and exploring the gardens on property maintained by the Great Lakes Brewing Company and the Bath Gamma Garden Club. The festival also features chicken keeping talks, sheep shearing, fiber dyeing and much more! June 8 and 9, 10 am – 5 pm.  The Citizen’s of Hale auxiliary group will be holding their annual Plant Sale. Special historic and heirloom annuals, perennials and herbs will be offered  Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 3 – 12 years of age, and free for members.

5th Annual Greater Akron Summit Business Conference & Expo on May 20 & 22

The Greater Summit Business Conference & Expo is a shared initiative by the County of Summit and City of Akron, and many others.  The event brings together small business, minority business enterprises, and corporations from across the State of Ohio to engage with corporations for the purpose of growth and development.

Attendees will be able to capitalize on numerous benefits from attending this event including workshops, the business-to-business trade show, and networking. Certified small businesses may also be eligible for contract opportunities provided by corporations as well as city and state agencies.

The Pitch Competition provides entrepreneurs and small business owners an opportunity to pitch their ideas to a panel of successful corporate leaders and business owners. The panelists will evaluate the participants business plan, ideas, and goals. The panelists will then make recommendations and assist where can.

Hale Farm & Village Presents Preservation Workshop: Wood Windows 101 on Mar. 30

Robert Brookover, craftsman and owner of the Cohee Preservation Company, will demonstrate and discuss the many facets of keeping your historic wood windows in working order for decades to come. Small Business Outreach Meeting on Trade Agreements with Japan, European Union, and United Kingdom on Mar. 26

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy is interested in receiving feedback from small businesses and their representatives regarding their views on trade agreements being negotiated with Japan, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, and their experience doing business in these markets. The Office of Advocacy is tasked with producing a report to Congress evaluating the economic impacts of these trade agreements in negotiations regarding small businesses, particularly in the services, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors, as well as highlighting small business priorities, opportunities, and challenges. Advocacy is conducting outreach to small businesses across the U.S. to better understand important small business concerns regarding trade with these markets and how trade agreements would impact small businesses.
