Nationally Recognized Minority-Focused Startup Accelerator Coming to Akron

Greater Akron—Bounce Innovation Hub, GAR Foundation, Burton D. Morgan Foundation, the City of Akron and the Greater Akron Chamber announced today their partnership with MORTAR, an accelerator and business development service for historically marginalized entrepreneurs.  MORTAR was founded in 2014 in Cincinnati and is a 15-week program that helps both existing and aspiring entrepreneurs learn the fundamental elements of business ownership and build a comprehensive business canvas. A primary goal of the program is to launch businesses that contribute to local economic development and establish a path to generational sustainability and wealth. It has been credited by Essence Magazine with helping Cincinnati become the fastest-growing economic power in the Midwest for minority small business owners.

AAF-Akron Presents the 75th Annual American Advertising Awards on Feb. 21

The 75th Annual AAF-Akron American Advertising Awards celebrates the creative spirit of excellence in advertising. It honors the best creative work produced by area advertising professionals and students. Hundreds of professionals from the Greater Akron and Canton advertising community will be in attendance at the largest advertising and marketing event in the area.

Brace yourself for oddities, mysteries and astounding acts of advertising illusion! AAF-Akron holds its annual American Advertising Awards (locally known as the Akron-Canton ADDYs) at The Akron Civic Theatre on Friday, February 22, 2019. The prestigious American Advertising Awards event is a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by AAF. It honors creative excellence and cultivates the highest standards in the industry. With entries from Akron, Canton and surrounding areas, it is the largest advertising and marketing event in the area.

This year’s theme is ADDY Cadabra and is hosted by Eric Mansfield. The reception, beginning at 5:00 pm, includes restaurant tasting stations, a gallery of creative and cash bar. The award ceremony begins at 7:30 pm. Immediately following the awards, the official ADDYs After Party will kick off right on stage. Northeast Ohio companies with roughly $5 million - $15 million in sales and a desire to grow are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for the fourth cohort of the Scalerator® NEO program, as spaces are limited. This intensive, six-month program is a proven classroom and peer-to-peer learning experience that has helped over 200 companies in the United States and around the world achieve significant, top-line growth including 40 in Northeast Ohio. The 2020 program will run April - October in Akron at Bounce Innovation Hub.   The online application and program information are available at www.ScaleratorNEO.org.  Apply by March 1.

University of Akron Interim President John Green to Kick Off DriveIT's New Speaker Series on Aug. 30

Akron-based DriveIT — the information technology skills training company founded by former Software Guild leader Eric Wise — is teaming up with the Greater Akron Chamber to help teach leadership skills.  The two are launching a monthly series of events called [email protected] that will feature area civic and business leaders talking to live audiences. The events will also be archived online for the public. The series will kick off Thursday, Aug. 30, with a presentation by The University of Akron Interim President Dr. John Green: "SurrealPolitik: Leading a Medieval Institution in the Modern World."

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio Presents Camp Ledgewood Open House on Sept. 6

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio’s Camp Ledgewood Open House: Family, Friends and S’More!


Activities include: crafts, campfire, s’mores, camp tour and raffles!  Food and beverages will be provided in the Low Lodge Dining Hall. Also, stop by Low Lodge to meet our CEO, Jane Christyson, and learn more about the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio! 

See all Girl Scouts of North East Ohio’s Camp Ledgewood has to offer! Camp Ledgewood is in Peninsula, Ohio within the boundaries of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This 400-acre camp features Low Lodge dining hall and activity center, a swimming pool, health center, trading post, and more! Housing units include cabins, platform tents, and troop house units. Ledgewood also hosts high ropes, zip line, and low ropes courses, an archery range, sports field, amphitheater, observatory, and Lake Loomis for boating and nature studies. Owned and operated by the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, Camp Ledgewood is enjoyed by more than 30,000 Girl Scout members throughout Ohio and is available for outside group rentals.
