Nationally Recognized Minority-Focused Startup Accelerator Coming to Akron

Greater Akron—Bounce Innovation Hub, GAR Foundation, Burton D. Morgan Foundation, the City of Akron and the Greater Akron Chamber announced today their partnership with MORTAR, an accelerator and business development service for historically marginalized entrepreneurs.  MORTAR was founded in 2014 in Cincinnati and is a 15-week program that helps both existing and aspiring entrepreneurs learn the fundamental elements of business ownership and build a comprehensive business canvas. A primary goal of the program is to launch businesses that contribute to local economic development and establish a path to generational sustainability and wealth. It has been credited by Essence Magazine with helping Cincinnati become the fastest-growing economic power in the Midwest for minority small business owners.

AAF-Akron Presents the 75th Annual American Advertising Awards on Feb. 21

The 75th Annual AAF-Akron American Advertising Awards celebrates the creative spirit of excellence in advertising. It honors the best creative work produced by area advertising professionals and students. Brace yourself for oddities, mysteries and astounding acts of advertising illusion! AAF-Akron holds its annual American Advertising Awards (locally known as the Akron-Canton ADDYs) at The Akron Civic Theatre on Friday, February 22, 2019. The prestigious American Advertising Awards event is a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by AAF. It honors creative excellence and cultivates the highest standards in the industry. With entries from Akron, Canton and surrounding areas, it is the largest advertising and marketing event in the area.

This year’s theme is ADDY Cadabra and is hosted by Eric Mansfield. The reception, beginning at 5:00 pm, includes restaurant tasting stations, a gallery of creative and cash bar. The award ceremony begins at 7:30 pm. Immediately following the awards, the official ADDYs After Party will kick off right on stage. Kent State University Veteran's Day Activities on Nov. 8

Each November Kent State hosts a Veterans Day Program to express appreciation for student, faculty, staff and community men and women who are veterans or current members of the U.S. military.  Members of Kent State’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs, staff from the Center for Adult and Veterans Services and students from Undergraduate Student Government help plan and participate in the commemoration.

Kent State Accounting Department to Host Tax Update Workshop for Small Business Owners on Nov. 8

The Accounting Department at Kent State University’s College of Business Administration invites business owners and accountants to the Tax Update for Small Business Owners.  The workshop will begin with breakfast and registration at 7:15 am. The program will start at 7:55 a.m. and will end at noon.

An outreach activity of the Accounting Department, the workshop is sponsored by Bober Markey and Fedorovich; CBIZ; and Bodine Perry. It is designed to help the small business owner navigate and plan for the effects from the 2017 tax reform. Workshop speakers are tax experts and will cover some of the most vital topics of 2017 tax reform as they relate to the small business owner, including choice of business entity, new Section 199A deduction for qualified business income, and changes to business deductions, exclusions, and credits.

“This workshop is timed so that the business owner has still has time to do year-end tax planning in view of the 2017 tax reform,” said Wendy Tietz, Ph.D., professor of accounting at Kent State’s College of Business Administration. “The speakers for this workshop are dynamic and possess a great deal of tax knowledge. We are excited to offer this workshop and help small business owners navigate these topics.” 

The workshop qualifies for 4.3 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit for CPAs in Ohio.  The registration fee is $50 per attendee. The fee covers all conference materials as well as breakfast, refreshments and parking. The University of Akron, Stark State College Announce New Dual Enrollment Partnership

Stark State College and The University of Akron today announced a new pioneering agreement facilitating streamlined dual admission and enrollment. “Direct Connect” is an expanded partnership between the two institutions providing opportunity for students to be dually enrolled at both Stark State College (SSC) and The University of Akron (UA) as they complete an associate degree while preparing for transfer to complete a bachelor’s degree. The partnership also allows students the opportunity to take advantage of amenities at both institutions, allowing students to become fully immersed at each.
