Nationally Recognized Minority-Focused Startup Accelerator Coming to Akron

Greater Akron—Bounce Innovation Hub, GAR Foundation, Burton D. Morgan Foundation, the City of Akron and the Greater Akron Chamber announced today their partnership with MORTAR, an accelerator and business development service for historically marginalized entrepreneurs.  MORTAR was founded in 2014 in Cincinnati and is a 15-week program that helps both existing and aspiring entrepreneurs learn the fundamental elements of business ownership and build a comprehensive business canvas. A primary goal of the program is to launch businesses that contribute to local economic development and establish a path to generational sustainability and wealth. It has been credited by Essence Magazine with helping Cincinnati become the fastest-growing economic power in the Midwest for minority small business owners.

AAF-Akron Presents the 75th Annual American Advertising Awards on Feb. 21

The 75th Annual AAF-Akron American Advertising Awards celebrates the creative spirit of excellence in advertising. It honors the best creative work produced by area advertising professionals and students. Hundreds of professionals from the Greater Akron and Canton advertising community will be in attendance at the largest advertising and marketing event in the area.

Brace yourself for oddities, mysteries and astounding acts of advertising illusion! AAF-Akron holds its annual American Advertising Awards (locally known as the Akron-Canton ADDYs) at The Akron Civic Theatre on Friday, February 22, 2019. The prestigious American Advertising Awards event is a three-tiered national competition conducted annually by AAF. It honors creative excellence and cultivates the highest standards in the industry. With entries from Akron, Canton and surrounding areas, it is the largest advertising and marketing event in the area.

This year’s theme is ADDY Cadabra and is hosted by Eric Mansfield. The reception, beginning at 5:00 pm, includes restaurant tasting stations, a gallery of creative and cash bar. The award ceremony begins at 7:30 pm. Immediately following the awards, the official ADDYs After Party will kick off right on stage. Apply for the Fourth Cohort of the Scalerator® NEO Program

Northeast Ohio companies with roughly $5 million - $15 million in sales and a desire to grow are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for the fourth cohort of the Scalerator® NEO program, as spaces are limited. This intensive, six-month program is a proven classroom and peer-to-peer learning experience that has helped over 200 companies in the United States and around the world achieve significant, top-line growth including 40 in Northeast Ohio. The 2020 program will run April - October in Akron at Bounce Innovation Hub.   The online application and program information are available at www.ScaleratorNEO.org.  Apply by March 1.

Hale Farm & Village Presents Music in the Valley Folk & Wine Festival on Jul. 14 & 15

Presented in partnership with Folknet, Music in the Valley is an opportunity to enjoy local musicians playing their banjos, guitars, and fiddles. Guests are welcome to stop and listen to the musicians as they tour the grounds, and can enjoy tasting wines from select Ohio based wineries. $10 adults (ages 13+); $5 youth (ages 3-12 yrs); members free Wine tastings are $10 for a glass and 5 tickets (good for one tasting each). PAWSibilities®, Humane Society of Greater Akron Bark in the Park

All donations will directly benefit the thousands of animals rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed by PAWSibilities, Humane Society of Greater Akron (PHSCGA) every year!  

PHSGA takes in the toughest cases - the abused, abandoned, sick, and injured.  These forgotten and discarded animals are provided with the best care and attention by a dedicated staff and hundreds of generous volunteers.  Animals stay at PHSGA until they find their new family!  PHSGA is a "no time limit" facility.  Animals are never euthanized for space.

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens Presents "Off the Vine: An Evening Paring of Food & Wine" on Jul. 19

Enjoy the gardens and the FUSED exhibit on a warm summer night

After starting the evening with a glass of sparkling wine, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy samples of more than 60 varieties of wine at stations throughout the historic gardens, complemented by tapas-style offerings by Acme Fresh Market Catering, Driftwood Catering, Taste of Excellence, and Todaro's; with desserts by Tiffany's Bakery. Music by Celestial Strings, The Stingers, Tuesday Musical, and Zach Friedhof will enhance the evening. The Manor House is open for self-guided tours, and OFF THE VINE is also an opportunity to see "FUSED: Garden Gallery of Art & Metal," the outdoor garden exhibit inspired by the paintings of Gertrude Seiberling.

A retail wine pop-up shop will be open during OFF THE VINE, so that guests may purchase bottles of their favorite samples to take home.

"We're excited to present Off the Vine so that guests can enjoy a beautiful summer evening on the estate. It's perfect for a date night, or an evening out with friends, and we invite all of our supporters to join us," notes Sean Joyce, President & Executive Director of Stan Hywet.
