Jay Gershen and Elizabeth Bartz: Gov. DeWine Understands Our Transportation Needs

3/28/2019

Ohio must pass a transportation budget that addresses our transportation infrastructure funding issues, now, rather than providing a temporary fix that does not live up to the current needs of the state. Currently, there is earnest support from within the business community for increasing the state’s investment in roads and bridges and for increased levels of public transportation funding. Key leaders from within the Greater Akron region’s business community firmly believe that to properly address the tangible needs of Ohio’s infrastructure and ensure Ohioans can travel reliably and affordably, the administration of Gov. Mike DeWine must fight for the investment in roads and bridges that is consistent with its original proposal of increasing the motor fuel tax by 18 cents and support the House’s proposed increased level of support for public transportation.

Greater Akron Chamber Unveils Inclusive Economic Development Strategy

3/22/2019

The Greater Akron Chamber has a new strategy to help grow the regional economy as well as the organization. The “strategy blueprint” was unveiled Thursday night before about 900 people at the chamber’s 112th annual meeting at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron. The blueprint reflects the changes taking place in the area as well as in the chamber’s mission to help local businesses, Steve Millard, who nine months ago became the organization’s president and chief executive officer, said prior to the meeting. “We are laying the foundation for the work we need to do,” Millard said. “We can’t wait to write a perfect plan. You need flexibility in everything you are doing.” This new chamber initiative succeeds its previous Advance Greater Akron program. The plan incorporates significant parts of the “Elevate Greater Akron” program that the chamber, Akron and Summit County governments developed last year to help the region grow, thrive and include all residents in economic opportunities.
