All Better Care Daycare: Q&A with Janell Scott

What is the background story of your business All Better Care Daycare?
I am a parent with three children, so our mornings are hectic getting three ready for school and daycare. I was faced with a dilemma no parent should have to face, when two of my children woke up sick on the same day. This got me thinking  about how often my kids were coming home from school with a virus or flu bug they picked up from a classmate, or a note from the school saying another student has a contagious illness, like strep throat or pink eye. I work full time and their Dad attends classes. This left us constantly taking turns missing work, classes, and meetings in order to care for our sick children.  I was wondering how many other parents out there were dealing with the same dilemma and trying to juggle busy schedules and sick children. I do not think caregivers or parents should feel guilty about making the care of their sick children a priority. This is what sparked the idea in my head to start All Better Care. I know how important it is as a parent to make sure that your little ones are receiving the care that they need. Ultimately, I want to be a resource to other parents who are facing the same dilemma of missing work, or other important obligations to take care of their sick children. I am excited to have started to put this business plan into motion earlier this year.

How do you expect to see growth with your business?
I expect the business to grow based on what coworkers and friends have told me. They have almost all ran into this issue and saw a huge need for this type of service in our community. I also did some research in our area and did not find any company that currently offers what we are offering.

Where does the “All Better Care” name come from?
All Better Care was inspired by the ABC blocks that are so familiar to children and parents. I knew I wanted a name that stood for the exceptional service we will provide. “All Better Care” is the type of care we want to give to the children.

What got you into the healthcare business?
My first healthcare job in 2009 involved working with individuals with mental disabilities in group homes. This job confirmed my love for taking care of people, but I needed to determine what my area of specialty would be. I decided to attend nursing school at Cleveland State University. My first job after graduation was in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Akron Childrens Hospital. This is where I found my passion for pediatrics and developed a love for helping sick children. I worked with kids from the ages of 1 all the way up to 18-year olds. Now, I am at the point in my career, where I want to be a resource for parents who need a daycare for their sick children. My previous experiences lend themselves to providing the best possible care of sick children in a daycare setting. Pediatrics is my heart!

What struggles have you faced in the scale-up of your company or just as an entrepreneur?

I am entering the business world with a health care field background, where it is all about taking care of your patients, from the time they are admitted to the time they are discharged. Now, I am having to navigate the business side of a start-up company and this is all new, exciting, and scary. Luckily, I have many people to call on for help and guidance and a good networking community.  The MORTAR program at Bounce Innovation program will be a guiding force in achieving my goal of becoming an entrepreneur. I am looking forward to their recommendations when our program officially begins.

How do you define growth?
I believe everyone starts somewhere. When you start you have some goal in your mind of where you want to end up. Everything that happens in between those two points and the knowledge that you gain through those experiences is growth.

What are you most excited about for the MORTAR program?
I am most excited to begin! Our inaugural class has been postponed due to the Pandemic, with hopes of a June start date. I am eager to learn about how to run a successful business. This program will provide me with knowledge, resources, and experts to guide me on becoming a business owner. I am thankful for this incredible opportunity. This program will help me get our doors open for business and I cannot wait.

How has the Greater Akron region played a role in the evolution of your company/career?
Akron is home, I was born and raised here and now my children will call Akron their home. Knowing I can fill a void in our community with a needed business is rewarding. Seeing others from our city, like LeBron James, succeed and give back makes me feel good that I will be contributing to the success of our city.

Why should people choose to grow in our community?
Akron is a great city with so much to offer. Our city is filled with opportunity, good people, diverse businesses, and great leaders. The resources to reach your goals can easily be found in our city, it is a wonderful place to start.
