Job Summary

The Director, Marketing and Communications drives the visibility, positioning and reputation of the Chamber by telling the story of its work and impact in the community. This position will help to shape the value proposition of the chamber and its positioning with key audiences and work across the economic development ecosystem to drive awareness and visibility of the region’s resources and business initiatives.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Tell the story of the business community, its initiatives and our organization
  • Lead the effort to communicate with the Chamber’s stakeholders about key business community and economic development initiatives.
  • Capture and tell the stories of the region’s businesses and key business leaders in support of the growth and success of our companies and the leaders that drive our work.
  • Develop tools and approaches and utilize media and methods that differentiate our effort, extend our reach and leave audiences with a strong desire to support and extend our work.

Shape and Communicate the Value Proposition of the Chamber

  • Serve as a key spokesperson and evangelist for the work of the chamber and the business community.
  • Drive the process of collecting, synthesizing and communicating about the work that is done across all parts of the organization.
  • Support monetization of the work and of the chamber and its associated content to continue to drive the resources required to support its work.
  • Partner with staff and board leaders to shape the overall mix of products, programs and services that the chamber provides to our members and funders.

Enable value delivery utilizing contemporary modes and methods

  • Lead the thinking and doing related to finding new ways, tools and approaches to supporting the chamber's communication and information delivery efforts with core audiences and key governance bodies.
  • Differentiate the chamber with our approach to getting the message out – stay on top of trends and tools related to communications, information delivery and content management.

Shape and steward the brand of the chamber

  • Develop approaches to member and audience segmentation that enables a crisp, relevant connection with those that join, fund and support the chamber.
  • Ensure the chamber's brand and image are relevant and reflect the goals of the organization and our desired positioning in the community.  

Provide general support and leadership as needed as a member of the executive leadership team of the chamber.

  • Support other projects and initiatives within the chamber as required.
  • Represents the chamber in the community and on chamber and community initiatives as requested.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • MBA, advanced degree or equivalent experience leading the marketing, branding and communications initiatives especially in a professional services or other intangible product environment. 
  • Seven to fifteen years of functional or organizational leadership experience in a not for profit or for profit organization.  Demonstration of ability to play a leadership role across multiple areas of responsibilities, projects and initiatives with demonstrated experience in marketing, communications, media and branding.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to facilitate dialogue and to frame concepts, opportunities and challenges among leaders engaging with the work to be done.  Ability to confidently lead and participate in difficult discussions with leaders in the community.
  • Creative problem solver with ability to bring unique, proactive solutions to raising the visibility of the work of the chamber, the business community and key regional initiatives.
  • Professional presence and appropriate confidence for dealing with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail, with an ability to see the big picture.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Package (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Microsoft Outlook and core social media platforms including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
