Chamber Presents the Inaugural Greater Akron Inclusion Summit

8/8/2019

Greater Akron—The inaugural Greater Akron Inclusion Summit presented by the Greater Akron Chamber is a half-day event where local and national business, civic and community leaders will learn more about the economic impact of inclusion, the opportunities ahead of us and the next steps we must initiate to create an inclusive economy in Greater Akron.

Akron must grow in order to thrive. To grow, we must be inclusive. Creating an inclusive economy is not just the right thing to do – there is a strong business case for it. This is an urgent imperative for businesses, communities and regions.

In 2018, the Elevate Greater Akron regional economic development strategy was launched out of research that identified the greatest assets, opportunities and challenges facing the region. Paramount to this work was a key finding that inclusion must be a focus for Greater Akron in order to move forward and thrive economically. This finding yielded a deeper dive on the subject, resulting in the creation of the Greater Akron Inclusion Narrative.

During this inaugural Summit, we will bring the topic of inclusion to the forefront as we share the findings of the Inclusion Narrative, hear from local and national business and community leaders on the topic and engage in a discussion about the economic impact of inclusion, the opportunities ahead of us and the next steps we must initiate to create an inclusive economy in Greater Akron.

Amy Liu, Vice President and Director of the Metropolitan Policy Program of The Brookings Institution, will moderate a panel of local leaders including Billy Taylor, Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion for Goodyear; Para M. Jones, Ph.D., President of Stark State College; Judi Hill, President of the Akron NAACP; and Dr. Brian Harte, President of Cleveland Clinic Akron General. These panelists will share their perspective on the Inclusion Narrative and their own experience with inclusion.

Keynote Speaker, Luke Visconti, Chairman and Founder of Diversity, Inc., has spent more than twenty years shaping strategy and action with the country’s top companies and has seen how the very best are transforming their organization’s performance by leveraging diversity and inclusion. He will share his experience helping Fortune 500 companies and provide insight on ways we can leverage their experience to drive change in our own businesses and community.

The Greater Akron Inclusion Summit is on Thursday, September 12, 2019, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at The University of Akron Quaker Station, located at 135 South Broadway St., Akron, Ohio 44308.  Registration, business networking, and breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. The program will be held from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $45 to attend.
